Why We Use a Private Enclosed Field for Every Dog Walk | Indiana Bones

One of the questions I get asked most often from new clients is where exactly I take the dogs. It's a fair question and honestly one of the things I'm most proud of about how Indiana Bones operates, so it's worth explaining properly.

Every walk we do takes place in our private enclosed field on farmland just outside Newton Mearns. We have exclusive use of it, which means when we're there it's just our dogs and nobody else's. No surprises, no unknown dogs appearing out of nowhere and no variables we haven't accounted for.

Why does that matter?

For a lot of dog owners the biggest source of anxiety on a walk isn't their own dog, it's everyone else's. An off lead dog appearing from nowhere can be unpredictable regardless of how well behaved your own dog is. Having a space that's exclusively ours removes that entirely.

Every dog in our group is off the lead for the full walk, which for a lot of owners is something they've never been able to give their dog before.

It works for every dog, not just the energetic ones

I think some people assume a big open field is just for young dogs who want to charge about, but that's not really how it plays out. Older dogs absolutely love it too. They can take things at their own pace, have a good sniff around and socialise without feeling any pressure to keep up with the youngsters. Young dogs and pups meanwhile get to learn how to interact and play with other dogs in a safe and controlled setting, which is genuinely hard to replicate on a pavement walk.

The farm animals are a bonus

The field sits alongside farmland so the dogs are regularly exposed to cows and sheep through the fence. Over time this helps desensitise them to livestock, which is a real bonus if you enjoy walking your dog out in the countryside and want them to behave around farm animals.

Recall isn't a barrier to joining

Because the field is fully enclosed, a dog with imperfect recall isn't a problem. They still get a full hour off the lead running free regardless of where they're at with their training. We do work on recall during walks too so over time most dogs improve naturally just through the routine of it.
