Does My Dog Actually Need a Dog Walker?

It's a question a lot of dog owners ask themselves, usually after a long day at work when they've come home to a chewed cushion or a dog bouncing off the walls. Here are some of the signs that a regular dog walker might make a genuine difference.

They're home alone for long stretches

Most dogs struggle with more than four hours alone. Beyond that boredom and separation anxiety can start to show in all sorts of ways — destructive behaviour, excessive barking, toileting indoors or just a dog that's visibly stressed when you get home. A midday walk breaks that stretch up and gives them something to look forward to.

They're not getting enough exercise

A quick walk around the block before work is better than nothing but for most dogs it's not really enough. Dogs need proper exercise — off the lead, running, sniffing, interacting with other dogs — to be genuinely settled and content at home. A dog that isn't getting that will find other ways to burn the energy off, usually ones you won't enjoy.

They need more socialisation

Especially true for younger dogs and puppies. Regular interaction with other dogs in a safe and controlled environment is one of the best things you can do for a dog's long term temperament. Dogs that socialise regularly tend to be calmer, more confident and better behaved around other dogs as they get older.

You're going back to work after a period at home

This is one of the most common reasons people get in touch. A dog that's been used to having someone around all day suddenly being left alone is a recipe for anxiety. Getting a routine in place before the change happens rather than after makes the transition a lot smoother.

They're just not getting enough variety

Some dogs are fine physically but under stimulated. New smells, new environments, new dogs to interact with — for a lot of dogs that's as important as the physical exercise itself. A dog that goes to the same places every day on the same route is a bored dog.
